Southern Cross Travel Insurance
When we went to New Zealand in 2011 Sam was reluctant to get travel insurance. After our failed claims with Down Under Travel Insurance in 2010 he was reluctant to spend the money when companies are quite determined to avoid paying out.
I still believed we needed something and I'd seen lots of ads on TV for SCTI so I looked them up online. They were reasonably priced and their cover included the $3000 excess for car hire (which we were doing for the whole trip) so I reasoned it was worth it just for that cover.
When Jetstar lost one of our bags on the way over, and it contained our tent, all Sam's hiking gear, sleeping bag, etc the insurance became even more valuable.
As anyone who has tried to deal with Jetstar in this kind of situation will testify - the airline was taking no responsibility. For three days we couldn't even get someone to answer the phone line they'd given us for lost baggage enquiries. We had to buy new clothes for Sam - including a water-proof hiking jacket - and the insurance covered it.
We got advice from them about the future of our trip - without our tent and sleeping back, cooking gear etc our holiday couldn't proceed. Their advice was that if we had to buy new equipment the insurance would cover it. Fortunately, before we got that far, the bag turned up.
I found SCTI to be pleasant and easy to deal with. They were true to their policy and paid for the expenses incurred as a result of the lost bag. I would use them again!
